Alexander Liang is a seasoned member of the fashion world, with former positions at Mochi Magazine, The New York Times’ T Magazine, BPMW, and more. He is the editor-in-chief and founder of KENTON Magazine, a global lifestyle and fashion publication. He is also a blogger and contributor to Details Network, with a growing following and strong personal brand. We talked with Alexander to learn more about his transition from fashion marketer to blogger.
Why did you start blogging?
I started KENTON Magazine in 2010. Then, through social media, I started to share what I was wearing and some of the brands I was interested in, and people took interest. From there I started my own Instagram account and then that turned into Tumblr. My peers are fashion bloggers and I really respect what they do. So I decided, if I’m going to do this, I’m going to do it fiercely. I started my own site. You either do it right and perfect or what’s the point?
So when did you launch the blog?
I’ve had my site since October of 2012. It’s only been a year and a half, and I get about 100,000 visits per month.
When did you start posting with Details Network?
I only started contributing to Details recently. One of my friends is a fashion blogger as well and he suggested I sign up. It’s a cool thing for my site to be aligned to a brand like Details. It’s another way to reach new people who might not know about me and my blog. It’s another outlet to share what I’m doing. It also gives my blog some clout to be a contributor. People see the badge on my site and think: ‘He must know what he’s doing.’ I’m running an online magazine and also contributing to one.
Do you discover new fashion bloggers you like through Details?
Yeah, definitely. Absolutely. There are so many different people—it’s a cool mix. There are bloggers in there I didn’t know of, or that are quite big and have a large following. It proves that people can find me too.
Why blog? Why not just work for the magazine?
Blogging allows me to reach a different type of reader and connect on a more personal level with some of my followers. It also lets me really take advantage of the opportunities and connections that I’ve been provided through being a fashion editor. Blogging allows me to do something else and have a second channel, and it’s fun.
